A massage dedicated to pure relaxation; with a light gentle touch that promotes serenity, calmness and tranquility. This is a variation of the Swedish massage, but is restricted to a light touch, and is a personal preference choice.

A massage that uses a variety of techniques with an array of pressures designed to relax muscles by applying pressure to them against deeper muscles and bones, and rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart. This massage gives some attention to problem areas while still addressing the full body. It often involves the use of kneading, stroking, friction, tapping, and vibration.

Swedish massage uses five styles of long, flowing strokes to massage. It involves sliding or gliding, kneading, rhythmic tapping, friction and vibration/shaking. Swedish massage has shown to be helpful in reducing pain, joint stiffness, and improving function in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee over a period of eight weeks. The development of Swedish massage is often inaccurately credited to Per Henrik Ling, though the Netherlands|Dutch practitioner Johan Georg Mezger adopted the French names to denote the basic strokes. The term "Swedish" massage is actually only recognized in English and Dutch speaking countries, and in Hungary. Elsewhere (including Sweden) the style is referred to as "classic massage".

They can be delivered via any number of application methods including but not limited to Swedish, deep tissue, kinesthetic movement, stretching and energy healing techniques. These massages are tailored to the needs of the client and focus on releasing tight muscles, areas of pain and get the body moving back in a more natural state.

Deep tissue massage is great at breaking down scar tissue, relieving pain, muscle tension and getting your blood circulating. Deep tissue techniques are different than Swedish techniques but are used in combination with Swedish techniques to give an overall experience that is optimal. This type of massage reaches the deeper layers of muscles, fascia (connective tissues surrounding the joints) and tendons. This is a massage given to clients who have established with the practitioner and experienced at least one session so that each learns how one another works. Deep tissue massages should not hurt while in session, but they do require more pressure than Swedish techniques. Deep tissue clients are typically managing chronic aches and pain areas in the neck and upper back, low back, leg muscle tightness, and sore shoulders.

This is a Swedish massage done with the pressure and warmth of smooth round healing stones, heated in water. Excellent for grounding, purifying and centering, it is very comforting and soothing in the wintertime.

smooth stones by a river

A stone massage uses water-heated stones to apply pressure and heat to the body. Stones coated in oil can also be used by the therapist delivering various massaging strokes. The hot stones used are commonly Basalt stones (or lava rocks) which over time have become extremely polished and smooth. As the stones are placed along the recipient's back, they help to retain heat which then deeply penetrates into the muscles, releasing tension. This therapy simply aids in the traditional part of the massage, warming the muscles and other tissues quickly. This feels like a slow shower, without getting wet, and then getting a massage at the same time whilst you lay down and most likely fall sleep. If you like warm showers, and hope those alleviate your muscle aches but they don’t quite do it – this is a great experience. It is a truly one of a kind experience.

Although Reiki is hands-on, unlike massage, it is administered through a light touch. While the patient is seated or lying down and fully clothed, the practitioner’s hands are placed along energy centers and pathways on the head, neck, shoulders and upper chest, abdomen, legs, and feet (similar to those used by acupuncturists). As energy is transferred to the patient, the patient may feel warmth, coolness, gentle tingling, or just deep relaxation.

When asking this question, it is important to take note that Reiki is a practice that comes from a very different approach than traditional western medical practice. Reiki’s foundations come from the eastern practices, and the western medical model is primarily based on philosophies established through westernized cultures. Yet as societies are evolving, we are finding ways to merge the best parts of the two schools of thought, and cultures.

In the US, Reiki is utilized in over 800 hospitals across the US and becoming a standard part of hospital care for patients. Some well known hospitals which include Reiki as part of their comprehensive medical offerings are:

  • Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center
  • NY-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia
  • Yale New Haven Hospital
  • Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center
  • Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania
  • Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System
  • George Washington University Hospital
  • M.D. Anderson Cancer Center
  • California Pacific Medical Center

In a study by Hartford Hospital in Connecticut (Dec. 1999 – Sept 2003) receiving Reiki improved patient sleep by 86%, reduced pain by 78%, and 94% had a reduction in anxiety during pregnancy. Nurses reported that patients heal faster, with less pain, stress reduction, improved mental attitude and appetite and a reduction of the negative side effects of chemotherapy, radiation and other western medical procedures. Hartford Hospital is another hospital, with an established an alternative medicine program (1997) which continues to study the effectiveness of Reiki.

Using the scientific method to define and measure things, which are not easily tangible and are difficult to define, has always proven difficult. Yet, as one of the very foundations of western medicine, this method has proven very beneficial for the entire world. Even with this critical eye on individual items and trends that happen, western medicine is taking note of the effectiveness of alternative practices. In October 1991, the US government established a group to research program “investigating unconventional medical practices” and later, in 1993 the group’s purpose included “disseminat[ing] information to the public” determine if alternative methods might be of benefit for American citizens. The governmental interest in integrating alternative practices into our western society is a clear indicator that there is not only significant interest, but also significant purpose by a large number of people.

Outside of the US government approval there are many places you will find alternative methods are beneficial to traditional western medicine. Researchers are looking at societies as a whole can begin to see some of the problems associated with integrating both outlooks on medical treatments. In 2013, the World Health Organization published research and a plan to attempt helping many countries into reaching the idealized mix of both traditional and alternative medical practices. Some of the drive behind this approach and investigation is a societal and political one. More natural, less costly medical procedures and treatments are more accessible to citizens in less industrialized developed, less structured culture system with less access to formal education in the ways of western medicine. More formal medicine instruction allows for fewer mistakes, and assists in regulating licensing of practitioners, but is more costly overall. The WHO report clearly states a mixture of well educated and experienced practitioners (in both western and alternative methods) benefits patients the most in regards to pain, condition management and cost effectiveness.

Reiki, along with other alternative practices can be included alongside western medicine practices. Reiki does not infringe upon or negatively impact any medical treatment by medical doctors, nor is it a replacement for what western medicine does as a whole. It is simply a different thing altogether, but it can complement other treatments and assist one towards better healing and health.

While there is much debate by those who solely practice western medicine as to the effectiveness of non-western practices, there is some acknowledgement due to the multitude of centuries of indigenous medical practices by many cultures. Some of these alternative approaches can be measured by the system used in the standard scientific method, and some simply cannot be by the nature of what they are and how they work. However, one’s ability to identify something does not negate the actual existence of that thing existing or even working as it does. This can be said of a cancer or illness that western medicine can now identify as being present, and the same can be said of alternative medical treatments such as Reiki. I don’t believe any one way has all the answers for all groups, or even many times for one person. While I understand the study of groups does in fact work, and having been a public school teacher I can attest to the fact that you can statistically make better choices overall based on conclusions drawn from these studies. However, each person is unique, and generalizing would be shortsighted. I don’t see people as numbers or statistics. Being open to possibilities in such a way has allowed me to be able to learn of Reiki and I consider myself blessed, both personally and also to be involved in a career that was initially closely related to one that would be easily connected to such a practice.
